Welcome to
South Padre Island
Thirty-four miles of sparkling Gulf shoreline, world-class fishing and watersports, a vibrant dining and nightlife scene, outstanding RV resorts and campgrounds, and one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations in North America — all waiting for you on Texas’ crown jewel of the Gulf Coast.
A Place Like No Other in Texas
South Padre Island rises from the southern tip of the world’s longest barrier island — Padre Island — where the warm Gulf of Mexico meets the sheltered Laguna Madre, one of only five hypersaline lagoons on earth. Connected to the Texas mainland by the Queen Isabella Causeway at Port Isabel, this barrier island stretches 34 miles of Gulf shoreline ranging from the lively resort strip at the southern end to vast, undeveloped wilderness that feels as remote as it did centuries ago. It is, at once, a party destination, a world-class fishing camp, and one of the most biologically rich ecosystems in North America.
The town of South Padre Island occupies the southern few miles of the barrier island, centered along Gulf Boulevard and Padre Boulevard, with a vibrant mix of seafood restaurants, beach bars, watersports outfitters, and shops that serve both the spring-break crowd and the year-round community of anglers, kitesurfers, birdwatchers, and families. The island also has an outstanding selection of RV resorts and campgrounds — from full-hookup parks with Gulf views to primitive sites within the Padre Island National Seashore that offer a wilderness experience unlike anything else in Texas.
Just across the causeway, the historic fishing town of Port Isabel adds authentic Gulf Coast character, with its beloved lighthouse, working shrimp docks, and a small but rewarding historic district. Further inland, the Rio Grande Valley’s rich Delta habitat, the cities of Harlingen, McAllen, and Brownsville, and the international character that comes with proximity to the Mexican border give the South Padre area a cultural depth found nowhere else on the Texas coast.
World’s Best Kiteboarding & Windsurfing
South Padre Island is recognized globally as one of the premier kiteboarding and windsurfing destinations in the world — and the Laguna Madre is the reason why. The vast shallow flats of this hypersaline lagoon provide virtually unlimited flat-water riding in consistent side-shore winds that blow reliably across the Texas coast. The World Kiteboarding Championships have been held here, and the island draws elite riders and beginners alike to some of the most consistent wind-and-water conditions anywhere on the planet. But the Laguna Madre is far more than a kite park — it’s a blue ribbon flats fishery for spotted seatrout, redfish, flounder, and black drum that draws wade fishermen from across Texas and beyond.
- South Padre Island lies along the Central Flyway, one of the world’s great migratory bird corridors — the World Birding Center at the island’s northern end hosts extraordinary species diversity year-round
- Sea Turtle Inc. on South Padre Island is one of the most important Kemp’s ridley sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation programs in the world — daily educational tours are a must
- Port Isabel Lighthouse, built in 1852, is the only surviving lighthouse on the Texas Gulf Coast and offers sweeping views from the top
- The Laguna Madre is one of only five hypersaline lagoons on earth and supports one of the most productive fisheries in Texas
- Spring Break at South Padre Island is one of the largest spring break gatherings in the United States, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each March

South Padre Island’s dining scene reflects its unique position at the southernmost tip of the Texas coast — where Gulf seafood traditions, deep Tex-Mex roots, and an international border culture come together in ways that produce some of the most interesting and satisfying food on any Texas coast. Seafood is king, naturally. The fishing boats that dock at Port Isabel each morning bring in Gulf shrimp, flounder, redfish, snapper, and drum that appear on menus across the island. Louie’s Backyard has long been the island’s most celebrated waterfront dining destination, combining Gulf views with consistent quality. The Painted Marlin Grille is the standout for creative Gulf Coast fine dining, while Blackbeard’s on the Beach and Amberjacks Bayside give the strip its energy and outdoor waterfront character.
Accommodations on South Padre Island run the full spectrum. The Pearl South Padre, Holiday Inn SunSpree, and Isla Grand anchor the Gulf-front resort end, while quiet Laguna Madre-side condominiums put kayaks on the dock and the fishing minutes away. For those traveling in an RV or looking to camp, the options are exceptional — from full-hookup waterfront parks right on South Padre to some of the most extraordinary primitive camping in America within the Padre Island National Seashore, where you can drive your vehicle onto the beach and camp for days without seeing another soul. The Port Isabel Lighthouse B&B adds a unique boutique option in the charming historic town just across the causeway.
On the water, South Padre Island is nothing short of extraordinary. The Laguna Madre — stretching 120 miles between the barrier island and the mainland — is the defining geographic feature of this destination. Nowhere on the Texas coast can you wade chest-deep in gin-clear water over turtle grass flats and cast to tailing redfish visible from 100 yards away. The island’s surf school and kiteboarding scene draws athletes from around the world to the consistent trade winds that funnel across the flats. Dolphin-watching tours from the docks are a perennial family favorite, and the sea turtle nesting season brings a reverence to the island that is genuinely moving — watching an endangered Kemp’s ridley return to the same beach where she hatched decades before is an experience that stays with you for life.
On land, the adventures are equally rich and varied. The South Padre Island World Birding Center is a must for any visitor — during peak migration in spring and fall, hundreds of species funnel across the Gulf and make landfall here, creating a spectacle that draws birders from across the continent. Sea Turtle Inc. offers daily educational programs with intimate access to the rehabilitation of endangered sea turtles. The Schlitterbahn Waterpark provides a full day of family fun. And when the sun goes down, South Padre’s Padre Boulevard bar and live music scene comes alive with an energy that reflects the island’s dual identity — laid-back beach town by day, and one of Texas’ most entertaining nightlife destinations after dark. However you choose to spend your time here, South Padre Island has a remarkable way of exceeding every expectation.
